Disease challenge indicates a diet of MrFeed® provides shrimp immunity to EMS disease
A study performed by University of Arizona reveals that shrimp fed a complete MrFeed ® diet can survive a dose of a highly infectious strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus that causes Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS).

Scientists at the University of Arizona performed a study in which shrimp were exposed to the pathogen that causes Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS). EMS is caused by a strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus that colonizes within the shrimp gastrointestinal tract and produces a toxin that causes tissue destruction and dysfunction of the hepatopancreas. EMS is also known as Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). The disease is rapidly becoming a major concern for the shrimp farming industry, as it has decimated the shrimp production in regions of South East Asia.
In the study performed at the University of Arizona, Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) were fed MrFeed® formulated diet for 21 days. On the 21st day the shrimp were exposed to a dose of the EMS-causing bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Seven days after exposure the shrimp had an average survivability of 90%, which is equivalent to tanks of shrimp that were not exposed to EMS. Tanks that had been fed a standard, commercially available diet had an average of only 10% survivability.
