Menon Biosensors, Inc. records sales of aquaculture assays to major firms worldwide
Several MENTOR lab-in-the-box systems and assays for biosurveillance for food safety delivered as Menon team demonstrate continued success of early pathogen detection.
San Diego, August 24, 2015 – Menon Biosensors, Inc. has reported strong interest and sales of assays to shrimp and fish hatcheries, farms, and food processing facilities in the USA and several
countries in Asia. These assays were developed and validated to allow early detection of major pathogens affecting farm-raised aquatic species such as shrimp and salmon. The end users were successfully trained to use Menon systems and assays. Menon systems and assays provided significant advantages over current methods and industry standard.
As an example, one of the major diseases affecting farm-raised shrimp worldwide is Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS), also known as Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). The disease is caused by a variant of the bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus leading to devastating economic losses for the aquaculture industry. Menon’s assay enables real-time monitoring of shrimp pond water for EMS and other diseases, allowing for earlier detection than standard methods such as agar plate counting, etc. By catching the presence of the pathogen early, farmers can take remediation steps to minimize economic losses.
Other assays sold include White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), which can be detected within the shrimp tissue; and a general Vibrio assay, useful for characterizing the total Vibrio population within the pond water.
Menon reports that there is strong interest in these and many other aquatic pathogen assays, as sales orders continue to arrive. Assays currently available for purchase include Vibrio parahaemolyticus (EMS), White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), general Vibrio, Bacillus subtilis (probiotic bacteria), and many more. The assays are processed using Menon’s Lab-in-the-Box and Mini-MENTOR biodetectors based on NMR M2 platform technology which can perform molecular diagnostics and immunoassays within a single portable unit. The company is also currently focused on developing and commercializing assays for other food safety applications, including poultry and other livestock diseases.
